Editorial Experience

I have 15 years of experience as a writer and editor. My special area of concentration is on employment-related issues, although I have worked for publishers specializing in a wide variety of information.

My approach to the written word -- whether as a writer or editor -- parallels James Carville's famous advice to then-candidate Bill Clinton: Keep it Simple.

Some contend that the era of the Internet and MTV has brought about a waning attention span. I think it's more useful to interpret it as an expectation that information and ideas must be as efficient as the media that deliver them. If you can download an article in a matter of seconds, why should you then be bogged down by slow-moving prose?

In my work as a writer and editor, as well as my engagements as a public speaker, I strive to present complex ideas with words and sentences that can be easily understood. This does not mean important details are deleted or that material is "dumbed down." It does mean, however, that ideas are organized logically, and words that stand in the reader's way of getting to the information are eliminated.

My role as a writer is to thoroughly and accurately report information to the reader. The best informational writing conveys to readers a sense of what to do next -- whether that's reviewing a policy, making an investment or visiting a web site.

My role as an editor is not only to eliminate subject/verb disagreement and misused apostrophe's (yes, that was intentional) but to help writers "get to the point" in their writing. At the same time, it is important not to eliminate the writer's unique style. After all, the most successful publications, whether they are in print or online, are those that present an engaging variety of styles.

And, as an independent contractor, my responsibility is to give the client the high-quality work it is paying for, on-time and accurately.
