Jewish Heroines:
Making Their (Post)Mark
February Passings

Among the famous Jewish women who have appeared on stamps and who died in February are Henrietta Szold (who died on February 13, 1945), the founder of Hadassah, a woman's Zionist organization. Szold also championed an effort to save Jewish youth from Nazi Germany. She appears on Israel #188 issued in 1960.
Another Jewish woman who died in the month of February is the singer Dinah Shore. She appears in a set commemorating the USO issued by
Grenada-Grenadines in 1992 (#1419). Shore was born in 1917, according to some sources, and on February 24, 1994.
Among the Jewish heroines or role models who have been featured (or their works featured) on stamps issued in February are the two poets who were pictured on the other stamps issued in the set featuring Sarah Aaronson: Rahel Bluwstein (#1077) and Lea Goldberg (#1078). Another is the Jewish artist Anna Ticho. Her painting of a Jerusalem scene appears on Israel #771 issued on February 10, 1981.
Another Jewish woman who appears on a February issue is Rosa Luxemburg, who is on East Germany #1277 issued on February 23, 1971 (she also appears on other stamps issued by East Germany, as well as Bulgaria, Germany, and Russia). She was the founder of the Social Democratic Party in Poland and a socialist organization that later became the German Communist party. Luxemburg was murdered by her opponents in January 1919.
Israeli prime minister Golda Meir is one of the leading figures in Israel's political history. She is represented on a stamp issued by Israel on
February 10, 1981 (#770). The aforementioned by Chaim Herzog on heroes of Israel describes her role as the leader of Israel at the time of the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Herzog compares Meir to the Biblical Deborah.
We often refer to the Bible when citing the actions of Jewish heroes. But, as we have seen by examining the lives of these extraordinary women represented on these February-related issues, there are many sources of inspiration in contemporary times. As this and future generations of Jewish heroes are commemorated on stamps, it provides us with an opportunity to continue growing our collection of Judaica philately.
