This month's Torah readings also include another census of those on the exodus. Numbers lists the descendants of each of the tribes that started the journey.
Depictions of the symbols of the 12 Tribes can be found on Israel #55 issued in 1952 and #105-16 issued in 1955-56. Chagall's interpretation of the
symbolism associated with the Tribes are seen on #509-20 issued in 1973. The readings from the haftarah (prophets) that accompany the Torah readings include the story of Jephthah
(Judges 11:1-33) who vows to God that if he is successful in battle he would sacrifice "whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me on my safe return."
This turns out to be his daughter.
This incident is depicted to illustrate the Commandment against taking the Lord's name in vain. Thus it appears on Nicaragua #892 issued in 1971, Togo #1133 issued in 1982 and Lesotho #437b issued in 1984. Jephthah is depicted on Israel #575 issued in 1975.
The haftarah readings for the month also include some verses from Jeremiah. He can be seen on Israel #526 issued in 1973 and on Burundi #C233 issued in December 1975 and surcharged later that month (#CB40).
