Biblical passages and characters were frequent topics for the August New Year sets. In 1963 a set of three stamps depicted scenes from the book of Jonah (Scott #242-4). In l969, a five-stamp set told the story of Noah (Scott #394-8).

In 1973 three Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel) were featured (Scott #525-7). In 1975 three Judges (Gideon, Deborah, and Jephthah) were depicted (Scott #573-5). The 1977 set depicted the four Matriarchs -- Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah (Scott #638-41).

The next year featured the three Patriarchs -- Abraham, lsaac, and Jacob (Scott #701-3). The Book of Exodus was the source of the four-stamp set issued in 1981 (Scott #787-90), while the next year's theme was the book of Joshua (Scott #820-3).

Kings of Israel (Saul, David, and Solomon) were featured in the 1960 set (Scott #184-6), and other heroes (Samson, Judah Maccabee, and Bar Kochba) were featured the next year (Scott #208-10), all in the form of mock mosaics.

Sages of the Talmud who were also craftsmen were featured in 1979 (Scott #730-2). These were Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hananya (a blacksmith), Rabbi Meir Baal Ha-Ness (a scribe), and Rabbi Johanan Ha-Sendelar (a sandal maker). In 1976 the August New Year set featured concepts from the post-Biblical work "Ethics of the Fathers" -- "Truth," "Justice" (the stamp uses the English word "Judgement"), and "Peace" (Scott #606-8).
