The Wedding Month

After the Ball Is Over

A celebration party usually follows the wedding ceremony. This includes food, music and dancing. No Jewish wedding party today seems to be without at least one "hora" dance. A stamp from Romania (#2248), issued in May 1971, reminds us, however, that this dance was borrowed by Jews from a traditional peasant dance.

In telling the story of a wedding through stamps, one could also include stamps relating to the honeymoon. But not wishing to expose too much of Mandy's and Don's life to public scrutiny, I'll resist referring to stamps which depict sites in the cities they visited on their honeymoon trip.

But I will include Poland #1604, which depicts a painting entitled "Jewish Woman with Lemons" -- a reminder that, after their honeymoon, both Mandy and Don returned to their jobs. (Well, maybe this more reflects her father's attitude about work than hers.) And, after five years of wedded bliss, I still think it's appropriate to conclude with the traditional shout of "Mazel Tov" -- good luck -- for many more years to come.
